A teen has been arrested in a shooting that wounded an Ocean County high school student and caused schools to go into lockdown.
The victim was shot about three blocks from Brick Memorial High School, and ran back to school for help, police said.
Brick Township police were called, and the high school along with surrounding schools were put into lockdown as a precaution.
The unnamed victim was walking home with three friends at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, when the shooting happened, according to the report.
Video surveillance from nearby residences led to a no-knock search warrant in Asbury Park, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Brick Township Police Chief James Riccio said Thursday.
As a result, a 17-year-old boy was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses.
The investigation included detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, and High Tech Crime Unit, Brick Township police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team, along with other law enforcement agencies.
“Were it not for the collective resolve, determination and good old-fashioned police work displayed by all the law enforcement personnel involved in this investigation, this subject would not have been brought into custody in such a prompt and expeditious manner,” Billhimer said.
“Chief Riccio and I are extremely grateful for the team-work exhibited by law enforcement agencies in both Ocean and Monmouth counties,” he added. “This collaboration will continue as we strive to make our streets and communities safer for our families and our children. We will not let this wanton disregard for the welfare and safety of our communities to become commonplace.”
