Teen arrested with loaded gun during Atlantic City car stop

  • News

A ShotSpotter alert led to a teen with a loaded handgun in Atlantic City, police said.
Raquil Hayes, 22, of Atlantic City, was spotted driving away from the area of the shots when veered into the other lane while watching officers head to the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, Sgt. Kevin Fair.
While Hayes corrected his mistake quickly, it was enough to draw the attention of Officers Christian Ivanov and Daniel Arra, who turned and followed the vehicle.
The officers allegedly saw a marijuana cigarette on the floor and smelled marijuana, leading them to have Hayes and his passenger get out of the vehicle for a search, Fair said.
Hayes, whose driver's license was suspended, was arrested.
The 17-year-old boy in the back seat refused to get out of the car, according to the report.
He was taken into custody without incident and found in possession of a loaded handgun and more than eight grams of marijuana, Fair said.
Two marijuana cigarettes were also found in the car.
The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of controlled dangerous substance. He was taken to the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center.
Hayes was charged with possession of a CDS along with several motor vehicle summonses, and released.
