Police: Driver fled Atlantic City crash that injured two pedestrians, ditched gun

  • News

A Philadelphia man was arrested after crashing into two pedestrians and then fleeing the scene with a gun Thursday, police said.
One of the men was left with life-threatening injuries.
Officers were called to Route 40 just before West End Avenue at 2:12 p.m., and found two men suffering from serious injuries, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
The spot often has people fishing there. Both were taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus.
Derek Wiley, 22, was driving his Hyundai Sonata was speeding when he went onto the shoulder of the road to try to pass a vehicle, according to an investigation by Officer Tyler Daily.
Wiley then struck a parked car, before hitting the two pedestrians, according to the investigation. The vehicle became disabled further down the road.
Witnesses of the crash immediately began to provide responding officers with a description of the fleeing driver and passenger, Fair said.
Officer Robert Nawrocki spotted the men within minutes on the Peter F. Egnor Bridge and stopped them, according to the report.
Wiley was arrested after being identified and found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, Fair said.
The passenger was later released without charges.
Employees from a nearby business approached officers on the bridge, saying Wiley discarded a handgun underneath the tire of a vehicle, the report states.
After reviewing surveillance video, officers confirmed those accounts, and recovered the loaded handgun, Fair said.
Wiley is charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, assault by auto and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury. He also faces single counts of endangering an injured victim, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm, tampering with evidence and driving while intoxicated, along with multiple motor vehicle summons.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
