A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay the medical bills of a Margate man allegedly beaten by his son.
The fundraiser was started by the defendant's mother.
Longtime youth baseball coach Bobby Woods, 70, is recovering after he was attacked inside the Margate home he and his son, Robert Woods Jr., shared.
The elder Woods was found bloody and beaten in his bed Jan. 21. His son was charged and arrested in the attack. Woods Jr. was released from jail after a detention hearing, where his attorney said there was little evidence linking him to the attack, and that the victim did not know who beat him. The younger Woods is on house arrest at the Egg Harbor Township home of his mother, Jean Santarelli.
Santarelli has now started a page to raise funds for her former husband's medical expenses. On the page she lists her hometown as Margate.
"Coach Bobby Woods, Sr. suffered extensive injuries that will require months of rehabilitation," she writes on the page. "The road to recovery will be difficult, and as such, this GoFundMe campaign has been created to help him with his mounting medical bills."Santarelli could not be reached for comment.
Woods Jr.'s attorney said he could not comment on whether Santarelli is the one who hired him. He did confirm that his client was released to Santarelli and is on home detention at her house.
The page has a goal of $25,000. Just more than $1,000 has been raised since it was started Feb. 3.
