Local baseball legend left brutally beaten by son in Margate, charges claim

  • News

A Margate man is accused of brutally beating his father with a golf club inside the home they shared, and then leaving him severely injured.
Bobby Woods Sr., 70, was found Tuesday lying in his bed bleeding from his head, neck and hands, according to the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC.
His son, Robert Woods Jr., was arrested early Wednesday morning, and is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, endangering an injured victim and weapons offenses.
The senior Woods suffered a fractured skull, bruising to the back, abrasions to the head and back, and lacerations to the head, neck and hands, according to the affidavit.
Bobby Woods is a local baseball legend, having coached local kids through his Shore Baseball Clinics for more than 40 years.
He played for the Chicago Cubs as a shortstop and third baseman, and is in the Atlantic City Baseball Hall of Fame.
He and his 45-year-old son and namesake coached together.
In the bio on his Bobby Woods Baseball website, the elder Woods talks of his son.
He recalls coaching the then-9-year-old to a second-place finish at the 1984 Philadelphia Phillies Home Run Derby at Veteran's Stadium as "one of my proudest moments as a coach and father."
Now, the son is accused of brutally attacking his father inside the home they shared.
The younger Woods' former girlfriend alerted police, after finding the the senior Woods in his second-floor bedroom.
She told investigators that she had talked to Woods Jr. earlier in the day about a package that had arrived at the Bayside Court home, and he told her he was there.
But when she arrived, she found bloody pants on the second floor that she positively identified as belonging to the younger Woods.
Upstairs, she found Woods Sr. on his bed. Outside the room was a bloody golf club that was consistent with the victim's injuries, according to the affidavit.
Woods Sr. was intubated at an undisclosed hospital, the report said.
Woods Jr. is set to have a detention hearing Monday.

Note: The Atlantic County Justice Facility no longer provides mugshots to the media, citing the Atlantic County prosecutor’s order. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office says it’s part of the Attorney General’s Guidelines. There is no such guideline, according to the Attorney General’s Office, but they have told these offices for years that they should not release any photos that appear to be mugshots.
