Bridgeton man admits to racist threats aimed at 6-year-old girl

  • News

A Bridgeton man pleaded guilty Monday for writing racial slurs and threats under the online photo of a biracial 6-year-old.

Kyle Powell, 31, faces fives years in prison.

Powell, who is white, went onto the social media site meetme.com June 28, 2018, and posted racially offensive words and threatened violence under two photographs of the little girl, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.

“Kyle Powell represents the worst that our society has to offer," Tyner said. "Like a coward, he hid behind his keyboard and targeted an innocent 6-year-old girl with racial slurs simply because she was biracial."

When the victim's mother saw the posts, she notified New Jersey State Police, Tyner said.

The State Police and detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office were able to track the posts to Powell.

Powell told officers that he takes offense to interracial relationships, Tyner said.

On Monday, he admitted posting the comments to intimidate and threaten violence to the mother and her daughter based upon their race.

"I firmly believe that love will always overcome hate and that justice will always prevail," Tyner said. "Hate has no place in Atlantic County or in this world."

Powell also pleaded guilty to an incident that happened inside the Atlantic County Justice Facility on Nov. 7, 2018.

He admitted punching and kicking a fellow inmate, and faces three years on an aggravated assault charge, which would run concurrent to his sentence in the bias case.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 6.
