Absecon man indicted in violent Buena Borough home invasion

  • News

An Absecon man who served more than a decade on first-degree robbery charges has been indicted for attempted murder in a violent home invasion.
Michael Hayes, 44, was indicted for the Buena Borough attack that ended when the victim escaped his two attackers after suffering a graze wound to the back of the head.
Hayes and an unidentified man were both armed with guns Sept. 15, when they demanded money from the victim outside his Buena Borough home, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill said.
They then duct taped the victim's hands behind his back, and then forced him inside and upstairs to his bedroom, the charges claim.
While one of the men was lookout downstairs, the other stayed with the victim and took $1,000 cash and a gold necklace that were in the victim's nightstand, according to the charges.
When the victim tried to run down the stairs, the suspect in the hallway fired one gunshot, grazing the back of the victim's head, Shill said.
The victim made it to a neighbor's home, and called 911. The suspects fled.
Hayes was indicted last week. He was indicted in May for allegedly maintaining a drug-production facility inside the Showboat Hotel Atlantic City.
Hayes was released from prison May 5, 2019, after serving 11 years on robbery and drug charges, records show.
He is now indicted on charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, criminal restraint, terroristic threats, theft and possession of a weapon by a person with a prior No Early Release Act conviction.
