Man faces life in brutal rape of Atlantic City casino-hotel housekeeper

  • News

A New York man faces life in prison after a jury convicted him Wednesday in the 2018 rape of a Bally's Hotel and Casino housekeeper.

Jamel Carlton, now 36, attacked the 51-year-old woman at about 11:30 a.m. Feb. 11, 2018, just 2½ hours after he was released on a summons for assaulting his girlfriend inside the casino's parking garage.

A jury deliberated just more than three hours before finding him guilty of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, burglary, aggravated assault and criminal restraint, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill said.

The victim was pushed into a hotel room, where she was sexually and physically assaulted. An investigation identified Carlton as her attacker. He was arrested after a brief chase.

Carlton, who lives in Saugerties, N.Y., faces a potential extended term of imprisonment due to his criminal history, Shill said.

“We are grateful to the jury for seeing this case for what it was … the senseless and brutal sexual assault of a Bally’s housekeeper who was just doing her job," said Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko.

"The victim, through the support of her loving family, displayed an enormous amount of strength in coming to court to tell the jury what that man did to her," Flammer said. "We want to thank the Bally’s security team and the officers of the Atlantic City Police Department for providing us with the evidence needed to bring justice in this case.”

Carlton is set to be sentenced June 8. But he first must undergo a sexual offender evaluation at Avenel, which often delays sentencing.

He remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he has been since his Feb. 11, 2018 arrest.
