NY man arrested twice within hours in assaults at same Atlantic City casino-hotel

  • News

A New York man released on a summons for assaulting his girlfriend at Bally's Hotel and Casino was arrested 2½ hours after his release in the sexual assault of an employee at the same Atlantic City property.
Officers were called to Bally's parking garage at 5:25 a.m., for a domestic assault.
Bally’s security officers had already separated Jamel Carlton from his 41-year-old girlfriend, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.
The Freehold woman had physical signs of an injury and was treated on scene by medical personnel, Fair said. Carlton was arrested by Officer Corey Treadway without incident.
Carlton was charged with simple assault, and — in accordance with Criminal Justice Reform guidelines — was released on a summons from the city's Booking and Detention Unit at about 9 a.m., Fair said.
At 11:33 a.m., patrol officers again responded to Bally's, this time for a report of a hotel employee being sexually assaulted.
The 51-year-old woman was pushed into a hotel room where she was sexually and physically assaulted, according to the report.
An investigation conducted by Detectives Eugene Laielli and Fariyd Holmes along with Bally’s security officers identified Carlton as the attacker.
The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for treatment of her injuries.
At 1:44 p.m., Holmes saw Carlton walking along Atlantic Avenue.
Carlton ran as Holmes and Officer Joseph Kelly tried to stop him.
After chasing him several blocks, they took him into custody, Fair said.
Carlton, 32, of Saugerties, N.Y., is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, burglary, aggravated assault, criminal restraint, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
He is now being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Atlantic City police at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411(847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
