Bridgeton man convicted in sex assault of child relative

  • News

A Bridgeton man was convicted in the sexual assault of a child over the course of three years.

Pascual Matias, now 53, faces as long as 20 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault. He additionally faces five years for endangering the welfare of a child.

The case first came to light in 2014, after police were called to an unnamed school for the report of a juvenile student whose uncle was alleged to have committed acts of sexual assault when the victim was between the ages of 6 and 8, according to previous reports.

The incidents occurred between November 2006 and November 2009.

The investigation was conducted by members of the Bridgeton Police Department and the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 30, but that is usually just a hold date in sexual assault crimes. Matias will first have to undergo an evaluation through Avenel Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center.

He is currently in the Cumberland County jail.
