Atlantic City designer looks to honor the past, inspire future through fashion

  • News

Saleem Tolbert would have been 39 today.

But he was fatally shot in Atlantic City, a month before his 27th birthday in 2010.

His sister, local fashion designer Shameeka Dior Harvey-Cottman, is making sure his name is kept alive, while also hoping to inspire others to live their dreams.

Her Display House of Dior is hosting a Fashion Experience at the Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets bought before the show are $44.39 for general admission and $66.59 for VIP.

Attendees must be 18 or older.

“This isn’t a standard fashion show experience,” Harvey-Cottman said. “(It) will raise awareness about the war within self through fashion and visual arts, leaving its audience feeling empowered to push through daily battles while accomplishing their goals.”

She is dedicating it to her brother, who co-directed a similar show 12 years ago, just before he was killed.

“It’s important to keep his legacy alive as a reminder to his son, Saleem Jr.,” she said, along with his “nephews, brother and other young men and women to never give up on their dreams despite adversities.”
