Atlantic City man pleads guilty in attempted murder

  • News

An Atlantic City man faces eight years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder Monday.

Ibn Jones, 31, has been jailed since January 2021 in the 2020 shooting.

The victim, whose name was not released, was shot once from behind just before 2 p.m. Nov. 9, 2020, in the area of Indiana and Baltic avenues.

At the time, police said the wound was considered life-threatening.

A “concerned citizen” drove the victim to the hospital, where he received life-saving treatment.

Jones was arrested nearly three months later, after Atlantic City Officer Aaron Jones recognized the suspect driving, and stopped him at Indiana Avenue and Bacharach Boulevard, according to information released at the time.

Ibn Jones’ phone put him at the scene, with surveillance showing him approach a group of males and shoot one in the back, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Allison Eiselen told the judge during Jones’ detention hearing last year.

The car allegedly used was also registered to Jones and, when he came to get it from police, he signed with his left hand, Eiselen added. The shooter is left-handed.

Jones pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree attempted murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun by a certain person not to possess weapons, indicating a criminal history.

He faces concurrent terms of eight years and nine years when he is sentenced Jan. 19.

Jones would have to serve at least five years of the nine-year term for the weapons offense. But his total time would be six years and 9½ months on the eight-year term for attempted murder.
