An Atlantic City man was arrested for tasering a boy unconscious during "horseplay" at the child's Egg Harbor Township home.
Police were called to the home in the township's West Atlantic City section for a medical emergency just after 2 p.m. Monday, Capt. Heath Per said.
Officers arrived to find the 12-year-old unconscious and unresponsive after being shot in the head with a taser.
An investigation found that family friend Luis Surita Jr. had stopped by the residence and was playing with the boy when Surita discharged the taser that he had on him.
The boy was struck in the head, receiving one or more shocks that rendered him unconscious, according to the report.
The boy was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was later reported to be conscious and in stable condition. He has since been released from the hospital, but the long-term implications of the injury are unknown, Per said.
Surita was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
He is being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Detectives Richard Vogt and Katrina Cantell of the Criminal Investigations Bureau are investigating.
