An Atlantic City man previously convicted in a pistol-whipping was arrested after he allegedly held a woman at gunpoint Wednesday using a replica handgun.
Police received a call at about 12:40 p.m. from Gloucester Township police about a woman being held at gunpoint in an apartment on South Florida Avenue. It was not clear why that department got the call.
Patrol units shut down pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the first block of South Florida as a precaution, according to the report.
Police communications got the woman on the phone. The 41-year-old Atlantic City woman used code words until the dispatcher understood what she was trying to say, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.
There were two men inside with her, one with a handgun, dispatchers relayed to officers on the scene.
The SWAT team responded.
Once SWAT and patrol officers were in position, a man and woman exited the apartment.
Khalil Swain, 32, then exited and was detained.
Police searched the apartment, where they found a backpack belonging to Swain, Aristizabal said. Inside was a replica handgun along with suspected crack cocaine and heroin.
Swain was charged with possession of an imitation firearm, possession of an imitation firearm for an unlawful purpose, criminal restraint, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and certain persons not to possess weapons.
He was given a suspended sentence on a charge of third-degree threats in May 25, and released, court records show. The plea also included a 2018 weapons charge. Swain served 589 days in jail prior to his plea.
He is now back in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
