Ex-Margate firefighter convicted in health-care fraud scheme

  • News

A Margate firefighter was convicted Thursday for his part in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud public health insurance plans.

Thomas Sher, 50, of Northfield, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and three counts of health care fraud after a 12-day federal trial in Camden.

He caused the loss of about $1 million and received about $115,000 from the scheme, according to the charges.

Several admitted members of the scheme testified against him, including his brother, along with admitted scheme leader William Hickman.

While brothers Michael and John Sher opted to plead in the case, as have the other co-defendants, Thomas Sher opted to go to trial.

Sher faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greatest. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan.10.

About 40 people have been convicted in the conspiracy.
