EHT man who sparked hours-long standoff released from jail

  • News

An Egg Harbor Township man who barricaded himself inside his home after allegedly firing rounds while yelling at his neighbors was released from jail.

Joseph Dill, 42, was taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, almost 12 hours after the incident began on Tremont Avenue near Bates Drive.

Police were called to a home in the 400 block of Tremont Avenue at 3:37 a.m., for the report of an attempted burglary/disturbance call, according to the report.

A woman said Dill was breaking porch lights and had tried to get into her home by kicking the woman's front door, police said.

Dill approached the neighbor's home "Come and get it f-----," using a homosexual slur, according to the affidavit of probable cause in the case obtained by BreakingAC.

Police arrived to the man running into his home and barricading himself inside.

One of the blockades was at Oakland and Tremont avenues, down the road from Egg Harbor Township High School.

Several blocks of the surrounding area were blocked off as township police, SWAT and members from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office worked to get Dill to surrender.

He eventually did with no one injured.

Multiple firearms were seized from Dill's residences under a court order, but he was not charged with any weapons offense, according to the charges filed as of Friday.

He faces two third-degree charges of attempted burglary and harassment, along with three disorderly persons charges including criminal mischief.

Dill's charges were issued as summonses, which would have ended with him being released immediately.

But he was jailed on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in a municipal harassment case out of the township from 2021, court records show. No details on the case were available.

Dill did not stay jailed long. He was released from the Atlantic County Justice Facility overnight into Saturday, records show.
