An attempted murder suspect out of Delaware man who fled Hamilton Township police is now in jail.
Philip Harris, 24, ran from a car stop Thursday night, sparking a massive search of the area as he was considered armed and dangerous.
At about 10:30 p.m., police announced that Harris was in custody.
The Delaware man was wanted out of Wilmington, Dela., on several counts, including attempted murder.
Hamilton Township police received information that the Smyrna, Dela., man was traveling in a vehicle near Route 40 and Cantillon Boulevard.
Township police found the vehicle and initiated a high-risk stop at 5201 Harding Highway, police later said.
The passenger, identified as Harris, then fled on food into the wooded area behind the Wawa.
The search brought a heavy police presence to the area of Route 40 and Cantillon Boulevard and the surrounding woods.
Hamilton police asked residents to remain inside, saying Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.
Atlantic Cape Community College's Mays Landing Campus put out a notice to students that operations there were closed immediately due to "an escaped fugitive" on the campus.
"It is out strongest recommendation that area residents take the utmost precautions until the situation is all clear by the police," the text said.
While searching, police received a tip of a suspicious male fitting Harris' description near the Wawa at 300-Route 50 in Mays Landing.
Police found Harris on Parsons Row, where he was apprehended without incident, police said.
Harris is charged with resisting arrest and being a fugitive from justice.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending extradition.
