An Atlantic City man who was released from prison in September is now accused of running from police and discarding a gun.
A ShotSpotter alert brought police to the 400 block of Indiana Avenue just after 9 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Officers found evidence of gunfire, and got descriptions of two men seen leaving the area in a vehicle, according to the report.
Officers Moustafa Maarouf and Ivaylo Penchev found the suspect vehicle in the 2100 block of Sheridan Avenue, Fair said. They also saw two men matching the description of the suspects standing outside.
Jabril Mitchell, 31, fled as the officers approached, leaving Penchev on a foot chase, according to the report.
Mitchell allegedly discarded a handgun. He was ultimately apprehended and charged.
The second man was detained by Maarouf, and released after he was question, pending further investigation.
Mitchell was released from prison Sept. 19, after serving four years on an aggravated assault charge, Department of Corrections records show.
It's not the first time he was arrested soon after being released from state prison.
In 2018, he was jailed on drug charges just two months after he got out of prison.
Mitchell was just 16 when he was arrested for pulling a gun on three Atlantic City police officers in 2008, and then attempting to shoot at one, according to the charges in that case. At 17, he admitted to three counts of aggravated assault and went to prison.
He was released July 6, 2018. That September, he was the passenger in a car pulled over in Pleasantville.
The 2019 sentencing was also related to that case, after he apparently violated his release with the drug arrest.
His maximum release date in that case is listed as July 6, 2024, which means he could head back to prison as a result of the latest arrest.
Mitchell is now charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a ghost gun, certain person not to possess a weapon, possession of a large-capacity magazine, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
