A.C. councilman’s assault case sent back to lower court

  • News

Assault charges against an Atlantic City councilman have been sent back to municipal court, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday.

MD Hossain Morshed, 48, was arrested Sept. 1, on a charge of third-degree endangering for abuse/neglect of a child by a non-caretaker.

The incident began when Morshed allegedly assaulted his wife inside their home.

He grabbed and bent her arm, causing her pain, according to the report. he also allegedly pulled her hair and struck her in the leg.

The victim had visible bruising and redness, according to the allegations. She also complained of pain to her back, arm and leg.

The couple’s 12-year-old recorded the incident on Morshed’s work phone, according to the victim. She also said that when the child tried to stop him, Morshed pushed and smacked the child away.

He was given a simple assault charge for the alleged attack on his wife, which would go to the lower court. But the endangerment allegation sent the case to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.

An investigation that included the video from Morshed’s work phone determined that there was not enough evidence to support the third-degree charge.

Now the two simple assault charges will go back to the municipal court.

It was not immediately clear if the case would be conflicted out to a different municipality due to Morshed’s position as a councilman.
