Linwood candy retailer gets 18 months in multimillion-dollar health benefits scheme

  • News

A Linwood man was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his part in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud health benefits with unnecessary prescriptions.

Nicholas Tedesco, 49, a retail director for a local candy company, cost the programs more than $2 million.

He was sentenced Thursday, more than five years after he pleaded guilty in the slow-moving federal case.

Tedesco's brother's case has gone on even longer.

Matthew Tedesco became the first to plead guilty in the case Aug. 17, 2017. He cost the programs about $28.7 million and made more than $11 million. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 26.

Co-defendant Christopher Broccoli pleaded guilty last July and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Two doctors, John Gaffney and Brian Sokalsky, are scheduled for sentencing Oct. 16, and Aug. 22, respectively.

Nicholas Tedesco recruited and paid several individuals to receive medically unnecessary medications and to recruit others to receive them, including Broccoli. The medically unnecessary prescriptions for individuals recruited by Nicholas Tedesco were authorized by Gaffney and Sokalsky.

Tedesco's sentencing includes three years of supervised release. He also must forfeit the $782,767 he made, along with paying restitution of $2.04 million.

Former Northfield pharmaceutical representative Richard Zappala avoided prison time, and was sentenced to home detention in the case. The U.S. Attorney's Office did not issue a release in that case.
