Atlantic City man held in attack on woman inside casino

  • News

An Atlantic City man captured on casino video surveillance "body slamming" a woman will remain in jail.

Timothy Mitchell, 43, allegedly attacked the woman as she was sitting at a machine at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on June 19.

"A 6-foot-5 man body slammed a 4-foot-11 woman to the ground," Deputy Attorney General Nicole Wise told the judge.

Mitchell started to walk away, but then came back and continued to attack the woman, even as bystanders and then security tried to step in, Wise said the video shows.

She said at one point, the victim crawls out of her sweatshirt as Mitchell pulls at it.

The case is categorized as a domestic violence incident, as the two had a prior relationship, according to the charges.

Mitchell's attorney claimed the two were never in a relationship and that Mitchell said they met through an escort service.

"I don't know this girl from a can of paint," Mitchell told the judge. "I don’t even know her name. I call her Chrissy."

But Wise said Mitchell knew the woman well enough for her to have signed a temporary restraining order against him before the incident.

Defense attorney Yvonne Maher also noted that the woman refused medical attention several times, and told police she did not want to sign charges because she had warrants.

Wise pointed to Mitchell's significant criminal history in calling for him to be detained. He had been on probation for about a year at the time of the offense.

"He only remained law-abiding for very short periods of time in his life," Wise said. "And those times are when he was likely incarcerated."

Mitchell has 13 prior indictable convictions, including seven that were violent in nature, according to his criminal history. He also has a history of obstruction and a prior incident of throwing bodily fluids at law enforcement officers.

Mitchell also had numerous convictions in Virginia, showing he has ties out of state, Wise added.

Judge Dorothy Garrabrant agreed that Mitchell is a danger to the community.

"His criminal history spans 25 years," she said. "He has refused to remain law-abiding since reaching the age of majority."

The judge ordered him held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility until his case is resolved.
