Two charged, gun recovered in Atlantic City shooting

  • News

A shots fired call led Atlantic City police to a loaded handgun and two suspects Tuesday.

Police were called to an alley behind the 2900 block of Atlantic Avenue just after 7 p.m. for a report of shots fired, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Several witnesses told police they saw the shooting and then several suspects ran into a four-story apartment building on the block, according to the report.

There were no reports of injuries.

Officers on scene confirmed the suspects entered a fourth-floor apartment, and a perimeter was set up around the building, Aristizabal said.

They encountered Humberly Tejada, 18, as they went up the stairs, and detained him as part of the investigation, according to the report.

Hector Fernandez was found barricaded inside a bathroom in the fourth-floor apartment.

Fernandez, 20, was taken into custody but provided a false name and threatened to kill one of the officers, Aristizabal said.

He had several outstanding warrants and was jailed.

Detectives got a search warrant for the apartment and found a handgun without a serial number, known as a "ghost gun," according to the charges. They also recovered hollow-point bullets.

Both Fernandez and Tejada were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a "ghost gun," possession of hollow-point ammunition, terroristic threats, obstruction and hindering apprehension.

Tejada was released on a summons from the scene. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest.
