Philly man indicted for attempted murder in brutal Boardwalk brick attack

  • News

A Philadelphia man accused of beating a woman with a brick on the Atlantic City Boardwalk has been indicted for attempted murder.

Samuel Cooper, 43, is accused of tying a brick into a T-shirt on Jan. 6, and then striking the woman, who fell to the ground. He allegedly continued to beat her even after she lost consciousness.

Cooper did not know the 67-year-woman, who also is from Philadelphia, according to the charges.

He does not recall the incident, his attorney said at a detention hearing in January, citing mental health issues.

Surveillance video shows the man sneak up behind the victim with a brick tied in a T-shirt and the striking her in the head, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.

Neither the woman's name nor her current condition have been released.

In addition to attempted murder, Cooper was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and certain person not to possess a weapon.

He also has several pending charges from incidents in Atlantic City this past summer, court records show.

June 17 charges include criminal trespass, harassment and criminal mischief.

Two other criminal mischief charges from earlier in June have been transferred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, records show.
