Pleasantville brothers who beat EHT teen outside strip club released from prison

  • News

Two Pleasantville brothers who admitted to beating a teen later found dead have been released from prison less than three months after they were sentenced.

Irving Mayren-Guzman, 19, was found dead in the marsh near a now-shuttered Pleasantville strip club Jan. 25, 2022, two days after he went missing.

He was last seen running away from Centerfolds Cabaret, after he was attacked by Jamaul Timberlake and brothers Garnell and John Hands.

The three were arrested two days after the teen's body was found, charged with the assault.

While Mayren-Guzman's friends and family called for the men to be charged in his death, that did not happen.

An autopsy determined his death was accidental and that hypothermia and intoxication played a role, but not the beating.

All three pleaded guilty and were sentenced in March 3.

John Hands and Timberlake were sentenced to four years in prison. Garnell Hands, said to be the instigator, was sentenced to five.

There was no mandatory minimum to the sentences, which included credit for more than a year of time served in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The Hands were released Thursday under the Intensive Supervision Program, which allows inmates to get out early but with strict conditions, including monitoring and curfews.

"I talked to John this morning," attorney Matt Portella told BreakingAC. "He's relieved and happy to be out of prison. He's looking forward to doing good things and living his life.

"His family is incredibly relieved," he added.
