An Egg Harbor Township man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend was ordered held in jail at a detention hearing Friday.
Kevin Dorsey, 51, allegedly killed Charlina Burnett on Oct. 26, inside the Zion Road home the couple shared.
Police responding to a shooting at about 7:30 p.m. found the woman lying dead on the ground from a gunshot wound, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy said.
Dorsey has a long criminal history that included 12 convictions from 1992 to 2009, Judge Patricia Wild noted. He then had several prison sentences, including seven years, 10 years and two concurrent four-year sentences.
"This defendant is a person who is not supposed to possess a weapon," the judge said. "He was convicted already in the past of possessing a weapon and then he goes out and has another weapon in his possession. That is a danger to the community."
She also noted his domestic violence history, which was not presented by the state during the hearing.
Wild said that the restraining orders involved four different women.
"So this is the fifth woman against which he took action," she said of Burnett.
Dorsey appeared in court via video from the jail, where he had on a green so-called suicide gown. He also appeared to be restrained to a chair.
When the proceeding ended, two corrections officers came in and removed the still-seated Dorsey.
He will remain in the Atlantic County Justice Facility as his case goes through the court.
He indicated that she and Dorsey had domestic issues, but does not believe anything was ever filed.
“I can’t believe I did that,” police heard Dorsey say at the scene, according to the affidavit.
He then waived his Miranda rights and admitted to shooting Burnett, the affidavit states.
Dorsey was arrested. His charges include possession of a weapon by a certain person due to a past criminal history.
He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing.
