Atlantic City convict gets 16 years in gun case

  • News

An Atlantic City man arrested with a gun six months after he was released from prison is headed back.

Sean Lowney, now 32, was arrested May 17, 2021, after a ShotSpotter alert brought police to the 700 block of Ohio Avenue at about 1:40 in the morning.

A shot had been fired through the window of a storm door at his ex-girlfriend's home, an investigation found. He then handed the gun to a Georgia woman, who was found with the loaded gun in her purse, police said at the time.

A jury convicted Lowney in August.

He was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in state prison with parole ineligibility of eight years for certain person not to possess a firearm. Judge Dorothy Garrabrant also sentenced him to a concurrent five years for possession of a handgun with 3½ years of parole ineligibility.

Due to his criminal record, Lowney was sentence under an extended term.

Lowney was released from Northern State Prison in November 2020, after serving a sentence on gun and drug charges, state Department of Corrections records show.

That stems from a March 2017 arrest after a fight at a motel. Responding officers found 91 bags of heroin, 76 grams of marijuana, a loaded handgun and drug paraphernalia in his room, police said at the time.
