Court hearing gives insight into Atlantic City 'shootout'

  • News

A shootout on an Atlantic City street wounded two men and endangered a toddler, according to information released at a detention hearing Tuesday.

Kevin Bryant, 24, of Philadelphia, was ordered held in jail on charges that included aggravated assault, weapons offenses and endangering the welfare of a child.

The charges stem from a shooting that wounded two me in their 30s on the first block of South Florida Avenue just before 11 p.m. Labor Day.

Video shows a car pulled into the area of Bellevue Avenue behind Florida Avenue at about 10:48 p.m., and a man exits in dark clothes with a mask, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Allison Eiselen said, reading from the affidavit of probable cause.

Two men were struck, she said. That shooter has not been named or charged.

Surveillance shows one of the wounded men running along with Bryant and Demetrius Scott, Eiselen said. Both Scott and Bryant are seen raising their arms and pointing guns in the direction of the shooter, with muzzle flashes visible.

Scott is charged in the case but has not been arrested, court records show. He was briefly jailed in May, after he and another man were arrested allegedly with drugs inside a stolen vehicle.

Police found about 23 9mm shell casings covering almost the entire block with a blood trail, Eiselen said.

Several parked cars were struck, including one with a woman inside and her 2-year-old in the back. The passenger side was hit near where the little girl was, Eiselen said.

The next day, Sgt. Darrin Lorady and Detectives Christopher Dodson and Eric Evans were conducting surveillance in the 400 and 500 blocks of North Connecticut Avenue when they saw Bryant walking.

He appeared to be concealing something in his waistband, Evans wrote in the report. When they got out of the car, Bryant ran, jumping a fence into a backyard and climbing several fences in the area that backs to Adriatic Avenue.

Patrol found a gun in the area and Bryant was charged with possession. Ballistics would later connect the gun to the shooting, and Bryant was charged in that case as well.

Defense attorney Durann Neil questioned how his client was identified, since he is not from the area nor known to local police.

Eiselen said he was identified through the surveillance and then connected by the gun.

The gun also was distinctive with several rubber bands around it, she said. The same gun appears in photos on Bryant's social media.

There also was a federal detainer filed on Bryant, who was on parole after serving a 15-month federal prison sentence in a Philadelphia drug case. He was released in 2021, records show.

Judge Joseph Levin ordered Bryant held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
