Margate police rescue girl and grandmother from ocean

  • News

Margate police officers rescued two swimmers in distress this weekend.

Several people called 911 to report two swimmers in distress of the Wilson Avenue beach, police said.

A 12-year-old girl and her 58-year-old grandmother were both hanging onto a nearby jetty.

Officer Brendan Campbell, who was already on the beach answering an unrelated call, immediately responded and ran into the surf, according to the report.

Sgt. Chris Taroncher responded on an ATV minutes later and also entered the water to assist.

Each officer pulled one of the victims from the water, struggling with rough conditions and dangerous rip currents, according to the report.

The East Stroudsberg, Penn. residents were treated on scene by the Margate City Fire Department and released.

People are reminded not at unprotected beaches. Margate's beaches are closed for the season with no lifeguards on duty.
