But as the mother of four got put her phone in airplane mode for a trip home from Puerto Rico, she would not learn of her connection to the horrific events in Egg Harbor Township until she got off the plane.
She had been inundated with texts asking if she had heard from her 17-year-old son, and telling her he had not been answering his phone.
"I was calling to all different hospitals," but none would confirm he was there.
She finally was able to get to Egg Harbor Township police, who said he was at the Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.

Donte was rushed to the hospital.
"It’s been five days since the accident and I haven’t seen my sons beautiful eyes or heard his deep voice," Williams wrote Tuesday on Facebook, where she has been keeping loved ones updated on his status. "I’m stressed, I'm anxious, I’m scared. But I know God has his arms wrapped around Donte. I have faith he will bring Donte through.
"Please pray for my strength I feel so weak and powerless but trying to stay so strong for him," the post continued.
Donte was recently moved to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where a procedure successfully cleared his lungs. But the brain injury remains unchanged at this time.
Howard's younger brothers and sister who are all younger than 12 do not know about his condition yet. Williams is trying to spare the two boys and a girl who adore their brother.
The Mays Landing teen also has a 3-year-old son.
Williams has had to take off work to tend to her son. She said the Arc of Atlantic County where she is employed has been working with her so she can be there for her son.
But she did finally decide to ask for financial help by setting up a GoFundMe.
"More than the money, I really want prayers," she said.
Police still have not released the cause of the crash.
