Mays Landing man charged in Absecon carjacking try

  • News

A Mays Landing man allegedly tried to carjack a driver and then threw rocks at the fleeing car before he was arrested following a foot chase.

Police were called to Absecon Boulevard just before 8:30 Sunday morning for an incident in progress, according to the report.

Deshaun C. Washington, 31, had entered the lane of travel, trying to disrupt traffic, police said.

A driver stopped to avoid striking the pedestrian, and then Washington "aggressively approached the vehicle, banging on the hood in an attempt to gain access," according to the report.

The door was locked, so Washington tried punching the window, police said.

The driver then accelerated to get away, and Washington allegedly started to throw rocks at the vehicle.

The taillight was shattered along with other damage to the vehicle's body, police said.

Washington then ran as patrol units arrived, fleeing into the woods near a hotel, according to the report. Officers successfully located and apprehended Washington. He was taken into custody without further incident.

He is charged with first-degree carjacking, along with weapons offenses and criminal mischief.

Washington has several criminal mischief cases pending from last year, court records show. He also has an active simple assault case out of Atlantic City from 2022, with a failure to appear.
