Lots to do in Atlantic City without breaking the bank

  • News

Let’s start this weekend’s roundup with everyone’s favorite word: Free.

Leap over to Orange Loop mainstay Rhythm & Spirits on Thursday to hear Lovesick.

This band, from Bologna, Italy, is known for playing American, western swing music from the 40s and 50s. Yep. You heard me right. Suffice it to say, this type of act doesn’t come around these here parts too often. Don’t miss it!

Doors open at 6 p.m. with two local opening acts playing at 6:30 p.m.

The Looms — who describe themselves on their socials as “Anarcho-Folk punks occupying the imperialist territory known as South Jersey!" — perhaps need no more colorful description from me. Also appearing is singer/songwriter The Williams Boy from Burlington, Burlington County. I feel like there’s a story to that name. Maybe we’ll find out Thursday.

With Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m., y'all need to turn that last Zoom meeting of the day into an email, so Brad doesn’t have the chance to make you late with stupid questions.

Dust off your hat, pull those boots out of the closet and make a night out of it. Ya-hoo!

Celebrate indie at the Anchor

There’s a little something for everyone this weekend at one of Atlantic City’s only indie music venues, Anchor Rock Club.

You can go to I Love Reggae Music with DJ Able at 8 p.m. Friday. Admission and good vibes are both free.

The following day, ARC welcomes two 90s tribute bands to the stage for one low ticket price.

Know Your Enemy, paying homage to Rage Against the Machine and Issues, will be playing Korn tracks by “ear”. (See what I did there?)

Tickets are $13.32 on the venue’s website plus tax and fees. If you’re a gambler and think it won’t sell out, tickets for this show are cheapest ($15) at the door.

If you haven’t been to this venue yet, what are you waiting for?

There’s excellent sound, a balcony to get away from the crowd in front of the stage, nearby parking, a decent bar, plenty of old Atlantic City charm and truly some of the friendliest bouncers I have ever encountered. But the last one may be because they think I’m a grandmother picking up kids who went to the show. But still.

We'll drink to that ...

If music isn’t your thing but imbibing is, then you should head over to Showboat on Saturday for the Craft Beer, Wine, & Spirit's Festival at "The Boat" from 4 to 9 p.m.

There will be 50 breweries, 20 distilleries, 20 vineyards, 10 ready-to-drink options, 10 ciders and 10 seltzers on hand for you to try.

Plus, you can follow the link above to get BOGO general admission, bringing down the price to $30!

Knowing that two drinks easily cost more than $30 at the casinos on a Saturday evening, this one is a no-brainer. Make a pretzel necklace and call an Uber.

Drawing in new artists

On Monday, Union Hall Arts is celebrating the second anniversary of Life Drawing.

Tickets are $20 and include a glass of wine. Attendees will get to spend time in a historic union hall turned art house. Professional artists and newbies will enjoy drawing a live model.

There are limited supplies available for new artists who want to try out this event. You are also welcome to bring your own set up. The artistic directors of the gallery bill this as a recurring community event more than a class. Don’t be intimidated if you have yet to win a game of Pictionary. It’s more about the journey and fellowship.

Ticket holders will get to mingle, show off their art, meet like-minded people and support the local art scene from 5:45 to 8 p.m.

Alternatively, Life Drawing is available every Wednesday at the same time.

Burgers and BINGO!

Since we started with free events, let’s end with one too.

Tuesdays in the offseason, yours truly hosts BINGO at EHT Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House from 6 to 8 p.m. And you guessed it, it’s free to play.

There’s a great crowd of regulars who compete to win swag, hear jokes and celebrate special occasions, and maybe even take home a gift certificate. Daubers and BINGO cards provided.

Pro Tip: Come early and enjoy a very extensive Happy Hour menu and claim your table before we start calling numbers.

EHT Vagabond has great food, a wide selection of unique taps and two seating areas. Try the made-to-order sangria at least once. Trust me.
