Ex-Atlantic County official sentenced in theft

  • News

A former Atlantic County deputy superintendent of elections was sentenced to four years' probation Friday.

Michael Gibbons, 38, of Glendora, Camden County, was also must pay back $911 in tax dollars he illegally paid employees.

He admitted last April that he added unauthorized overtime hours to an employee's payroll record April 7, 2017, and then told that employee to deposit the money into a bank account provided by Gibbons.

He also admitted that he approved paying two employees for work hours May 12, 2017, even thought they actually were directed to clean Gibbon's mother's home during that time.

Gibbons was indicted in 2019, on charges that include three counts of second-degree official misconduct and a third degree charge of theft by deception.

He could have faced five to 10 years on the second-degree charges.

Instead, Gibbons must serve 364 days in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, which he can do on day reporting.

He also must forfeit all current and future public employment.
