Margate taqueria closes its doors mid-season

  • Food & Drink

The restaurant business is hard. But it’s highly unusual that a restaurant would close when customers line up for its good eats.

Tacocat owners Mike and Randi Talley decided to close the taqueria next to Downbeach Deli, despite having a record-breaking summer following a year of growth, they said in a statement posted on their Facebook page Monday.

“Sometimes the hardest decisions you make in life are the ones that make the most sense,” they wrote.

Sunday was the last day for service at 8 S. Essex Ave.

A combination of issues led to their decision, they said, including inadequate staffing, a lease that is expiring and “pure exhaustion.”

They will continue to operate their popular food truck, called “Kitty Cat,” which is a staple at private events, farmers markets and community events. Kitty Cat will serve tacos on the beach at Huntington Avenue during Thrilling Thursdays events.

“Other than Kitty Cat, we are going to take some time to evaluate the future of this great brand to meet our loyal fans’ high expectations while ensuring we make the right decisions for us, too,” they said.

The operation got its start in Linwood at what was then called The Exchange, a food court offering a variety of food vendors.

Tacocat moved its operation to Margate five years ago, serving up poke bowls, tacos, burritos and cheesesteak rolls. It even garnered recognition for its chicken wings at the annual Atlantic City Wingfest.

The Talleys thanked their customers for their “loyalty, patronage, support, love and excellent taste buds.”

They said it was difficult to find and train staff in the middle of summer, but they value their employees. They are helping to find new jobs for their employees.

“Anyone who hires them will be very happy,” they said.
