Four people were displaced by an early morning fire Sunday in Brigantine.
The call came in at 12:45 a.m. to the 100 block of 19th Street, Fire Chief Paul Fuller said.
A strong defensive operation got the fire under control within 40 minutes, and kept it from spreading to neighboring homes, according to the report.
Engine, Truck 1, BLS Rescue 1 and IC-1 arrived from Station 1 within three minutes to find heavy fire coming from the front and side of the residence, Fuller said. Heat already had started to melt the neighboring home's fence and siding.
Firefighters established a water supply from a nearby fire hydrant under the command of Capt. Dan Hurtt, who immediately called for a second alarm.
Off-duty firefighters came to the scene, while an Atlantic City engine and Exceptional ambulance responded to cover any additional calls for the rest of the island, Fuller said.
Defensive operations began after it was determined all occupants were out of the home.
The main fire was knocked down before 1 a.m., with firefighters then proceeding to address the remaining pockets of fire, Fuller said.
The fire was deemed under control by 1`:25 a.m.
Firefighters remained on-scene for another two hours performing salvage and overhaul, including retrieving the residents' belongs, and searching for additional pockets of smoldering fire to prevent rekindling, Fuller explained.
A Brigantine fire investigator responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The house was deemed uninhabitable. The cost is estimated at $360,000.
