An Egg Harbor Township man faces charges of insurance fraud and filing a false report in connection to an Absecon hit-and-run.
Clay Stake, 50, told police his car must have been stolen when it was involved in a hit-and-run last August, according to the charges. He then filed an insurance claim, stating the same thing.
It was later discovered Stake was driving the car at about 12:44 a.m. Aug. 27, when the crash happened.
He has since pleaded guilty to motor vehicle citations of failure to report an accident and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, court records show.
Stake paid a total of $580 in fines and fees.
Now he faces third-degree criminal charges of filing a false police report and three counts of insurance fraud, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
The Office’s Insurance Fraud Unit received a referral from the state Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor pertaining to insurance fraud committed by Stake.
He was issued a summons June 12.
