Coastal Grandpa mixes old and new for decor by the shore

  • Real Estate

The "Coastal Grandpa" trend is producing a lot of buzz in 2024.

This trend introduces a fresh approach to coastal decor, mixing the allure of old and repurposed pieces with a contemporary twist.

Coastal Grandpa focuses on interior design elements that use things inherited from the past and have a history or a story. The combination of historical and contemporary design and textural elements will lend a home a traditional and forward-thinking appearance.

Colors and atmosphere of Coastal Grandpa

The color scheme includes light browns and tans reminiscent of the beach, a variety of dark ocean blues and various shades of sea glass. These hues create an atmosphere soothing to the senses and recalls the colors of the beach and the bay, giving the impression that you are always on vacation.

Many people can benefit from the warm and inviting attitude of Coastal Grandpa, a trend that applies to your entire home.

Combining new furnishings and accessories with vintage or antique elements can create an atmosphere in which the home and its inhabitants have character and appear to have been lived in.

White slip-covered sofas made of linen or cotton anchor the room.

Slipcovers at the shore are a must, especially if they can be washed. The white slip-covered sofa is the staple of the Grandpacore aesthetic.

Not a fan of white? Or the slip-covered look? There are plenty of sofas to choose from in the moody, dusky blues that are so popular this season.

Other seating suggestions are rattan or wicker chairs. Distressed leather chairs should also be considered to give a vintage look.

Large, distressed wood pieces or antiques are essential to achieving the look of Grandpacore. Desks, consoles, and bookshelves can be used in decor to give the vintage aesthetic, which is the goal of decorating in this style.

These pieces can be inherited or found in an antique shop or resell store. Look for something you love that has a story.

Large seagrass rugs cover floors and tie the room together. Accessories like large woven baskets to hold blankets, table lamps made of mercury glass or ceramic to give a reflective shine, gathered shells, and driftwood are displayed. Adding one or several of these elements to your living room will bring the beach home and be sure to check out the latest living room furniture sale.

The Bedroom

Bring accessories like a tasteful driftwood table lamp or a natural fiber rug into the room. Iron beds with crisp linen or cotton bedding in beige, ocean blue, or sea glass shades. Cover windows with wispy linen, Roman shades or shutters.

Furniture in distressed shades can be softened with lace pieces, even better if Grandma crocheted them herself. Decorate with live plants and family photos in ornate frames. Add in wicker or rattan accents.

Kitchen and Dining

Change your kitchen hardware to vintage or vintage style to give cabinets a vintage touch.

Consider painting cabinets in a coastal color or white. White kitchens are said to be on the way out, but that is not the case along the coast in seaside homes.

For an authentic coastal look, choose a soft coastal color. Butcher-block countertops are making a big comeback in 2024. Farmhouse sinks are still on trend, as is pendant lighting over islands.

Open shelving is used to display vintage collections or a new collection. This is another place to display a personal collection.

The Bathroom

Use vintage-inspired deep tubs and fixtures. Use woven baskets for storage and clothing. An antique ladder can dry multiple beach towels at a time, making less of a mess.

Wood vanities with stone or reclaimed vanities with soaps and lotions in glass bottles.

No matter how you incorporate the 2024 trend of Cottage Grandpa, it is about bringing life and the outdoors to your home. Look around at home and see what you already have and what would work together to achieve the aesthetic being created.

Remember, it is about having things you love and soothing elements to make your home calm and inviting.

There are many more ways to express your grandpa’s style, however, remember your home is about what you love and what makes you comfortable.

A great place to start is on Pinterest: Explore what you like and don’t like, then bring what you love into your home.
