An Egg Harbor Township woman is accused of beating her stepson with a cricket bat.
Police were called to a residence in the township's Cardiff section at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after the boy ran to a neighbor's house saying he had been struck, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.
Officer Logan Schettig arrived at the residence and conducted an on-scene investigation, determining the child suffered injuries as a result of being struck several times with a bat, Detective Sgt. Brett Fair said.
The Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad was called to treat the victim.
Muddasra Afzal, 31, admitted to striking the boy with a cricket bag as a form of punishment, the affidavit states.
She was charged with endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of weapon for an unlawful purpose and child abuse.
Afzal was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, but released Thursday evening, jail records show.
The boy, whose age was not available, was taken to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, where X-rays showed no fractures, the affidavit states.
He did have a number of scrapes and contusions.
The affidavit listed injuries to his left arm that included inflammation, multiple abrasions, scratches and bruising, right shoulder abrasions, right eye abrasions, left side of the back abrasions/bruising/inflammation, right rear upper arm abrasions, multiple abrasions and bruising to the chest, severe inflammation and bruising to the right wrist and small cut to the top of the left foot.
Detective Robert Harte assisted with the follow-up investigation into the incident, Fair said.
The public is reminded to contact 1-877-NJ-ABUSE or law enforcement to report any concerns relating to the abuse of children.
