Atlantic City 11-year-old struck by stray bullet inside residence

  • Crime Courts

Two Atlantic County women are charged in the shooting of an 11-year-old boy struck by gunfire inside his home.

Police were called to the 100 block of North Rhode Island Avenue at about 10:30 Saturday night for a boy suffering from a gunshot wound, Capt. Kevin Fair said.

The child was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Yanirah Davis, 22, of Galloway Township, and Yontay Cooper, 33, of Egg Harbor Township, were charged after an investigation by the Violent Crimes Unit.

The women arrived on the street armed with a gun and a hammer to confront a group they had a prior altercation with, according to the investigation.

They started smashing out a vehicle's window, and then began to shoot at the group, Fair said. One of the bullets went into a residence, striking the 11-year-old who was lying on the floor.

Both women were arrested separately Sunday.

Egg Harbor Township Police Officer Alexandros Doukopoulos found Cooper, Fair said.

Pleasantville police Sgts. Stephen Sample and Kendall Washington and police officer Musah Ali found and arrested Davis.

They are charged with 10 counts each of aggravated assault, along with single counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy.

Both were being sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. They were not yet entered into the system there by 5:30 p.m.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Atlantic City Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
