A Galloway Township man charged with murder in a Pleasantville killing was sentenced in a prior gun case Tuesday.
Kalief Lyons, 35, was on release pending sentencing in the case when he allegedly shot 38-year-old Baseem Taliaferro on May 9.
Taliaferro was found dead inside a home in the first block of West Pleasant Avenue.
Lyons had been out of jail two months after pleading guilty to a charge of a certain person not to possess a weapon March 5 in connection to brandishing a handgun Nov. 30, 2022, in Galloway Township.
He was re-arrested about 2½ hours after Taliaferro was found dead.
Lyons had a 9mm handgun and a large quantity of drugs, according to the charges. He also had on the same clothing seen in surveillance video of the suspect going to and coming from the homicide scene.
Ballistic evidence matched the gun to the one used to kill Taliaferro.
Lyons was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday. He must serve at least five years before he is eligible for parole.
He will now be transferred to state prison while the murder case goes through the court.
Lyons was released from South Woods State Prison on Feb. 12, after serving time on drug charges, records show
His co-defendant in the brandishing case, Matthew Lynch, is scheduled for sentencing on July 9.
