Somers Point man gets 12 years in Atlantic City shooting

  • Crime-Courts

A Somers Point man admitted to shooting another man in the back after the two were involved in a fistfight last year.

Jawaun Yeoman, now 27, pleaded guilty in July to second-degree charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.

He also pleaded guilty to first-degree unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon.

Police were called to the area of Sovereign and Sunset avenues at about 7:40 p.m. March 25, 2023, for the report of a shooting.

There was no victim at the scene, but a 33-year-old man arrived at the emergency room minutes later with a gunshot wound.

An investigation found that Yeoman and the victim were among two groups of men who met up for a planned fight.

The fight ended when Yeoman shot the victim in the back.

Yeoman, who was on parole at the time of the shooting, was arrested more than a month later, with a handgun in his waistband.

Ballistics testing confirmed the "ghost gun" — which had no serial number — matched the one used in the shooting.

Yeoman had been on parole at the time, after serving a five-year sentence for a second-degree robbery. He was sent back to South Woods State Prison as a result of the violation of his parole, and has been there since May 5, 2023, state Department of Corrections records show.

He also was one of three teen arrested in 2017, in an assault and armed robbery.

Yeoman must serve at least seven years and eight months before he is eligible for parole.
