Cumberland County detective killed in Bridgeton home invasion

A longtime Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office detective was fatally shot Tuesday night, during a home invasion in Bridgeton .

Sgt. Monica Mosley, 51, “was a constant friend and role model for all those with whom she served and led in the law enforcement community throughout Cumberland County and beyond,” according to a statement from the office. “She will be missed more than words can detail, but she will never be forgotten by her CCPO family.”

Police were called to the 600 block of Buckshutem Road at about 10:30 p.m. for the report of several subjects kicking in a front door at a residence, according to Bridgeton police.

They arrived to find Mosley shot. She died at the scene.

An investigation led to Inspira Hospital in Bridgeton, which led State Police to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where one person was detainedfor questioning after being treated for a gunshot wound.

Police have no indentified the suspect or released any further information.

No arrests have been made or charges filed at this time.

“The men and women of the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office are utterly devastated by the loss of Detective Sergeant Monica Mosley,” the office’s statement read. “We are resolute in making sure that Monica is remembered for who she was, how she lived and how she touched each of our lives.”

Mosley began her career at the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office in 2006, as a paralegal specialist. She became a detective three years later.

“She served our community with honor, dignity and respect before her untimely passing,” read a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office. “She served in various units including Trial Teams, the Special Victims Unit, the Community Justice Unit and the Professional Standards Unit (Internal Affairs), where she was assigned as unit supervisor.”

Attorney General Matthew Platkin also released a statement.

“Each of us should be able to feel safe in our homes, and when that safety is broken, it impacts us all,” he wrote. “While the investigation is still ongoing, we offer our sincerest condolences to her family, friends and fellow officers who worked closely with her every day. Sgt. Mosley was a dedicated public servant, known for her commitment to justice and her devotion to her community. We will always be grateful for her service. End of Watch 10/15/2024.”

Gov. Phil Murphy said he was “outraged and heartbroken by the murder.”

“As a detective with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, Sgt. Mosley served her community with distinction, working every day to ensure the safety and well-being of the people of Cumberland County,” he said ina  statement. “This act of violence impacts our entire law enforcement community and all of New Jersey. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved Sgt. Mosley. May she rest in peace.”
