A woman also faces charges for obstruction, hindering and tampering with evidence in Sgt. Monica Mosley's death
A Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office detective sergeant was able to shoot one of her attackers before succumbing to her injuries during a home invasion Oct. 15.
Three men are charged murder in the killing of a Monica Mosley, 51, who was attacked inside her Bridgeton home.
A woman also is accused of hindering their apprehension and tampering with evidence, including trying to hide the getaway vehicle.
Nyshawn Mutcherson was picked up in Millville by Jarred Durrell Brown and Richard B. Hawkins Willis, before the three went to a home at 131 South Avenue in Bridgeton, where they changed into dark-colored clothes before heading to Mosley's residence in a black Chevrolet Equinox, according to the affidavits of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.
They then forced their way into Mosley's home, and shot the longtime detective. She was able to get off a round, striking Mutcherson in the chest.
The three then fled in the Equinox, dropping Mutcherson at Inspira Medical Center, before Brown and Willis headed back to the South Avenue address, the affidavit states.
Mutcherson, 29, of Vineland, was treated for his gunshot wound. He told police he was shot in Millville.
In the following days, the other two men along with Cyndia Pimentel attempted to destroy evidence and conceal their crime, according to the charges.
Pimentel, 38, of Paulsboro, Gloucester County, is the registered owner of the Equinox, according to the affidavit.
She allegedly drove the SUV to Philadelphia with Willis as her passenger in an attempt to hide it and other evidence, the charges claim.
Mutcherson, Willis and Brown are charged with murder, felony murder, burglary and weapons offenses that include possession by a convicted felon due to their criminal histories.
Mutcherson is being held in state prison due to violating his parole. He had just been released in July after serving a three-year sentenced for two counts of aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim and obstruction, state Department of Corrections records show.
All four defendants were processed at the Cumberland County jail, but were transferred to other facilities, records show.
Brown, 31, of Bridgeton, is in the Cape May County Correctional Facility while Willis, 32, of Gloucester, is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Pimentel is being held in Salem County.
All four are awaiting detention hearings.
The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office is leading the ongoing investigation due to Mosley having worked for the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office.
The joint investigation included the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Bridgeton Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau, with assistance from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals.
“This is a significant step toward justice for Detective Sgt. Monica Mosley and her family,” Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said. “We are resolute in our commitment to ensuring that those responsible for this horrific act are held accountable. Our hearts remain with Detective Sergeant Monica Mosley's loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time."
Attorney General Matthew Platkin said that "the law enforcement community and the state of New Jersey have lost a steadfast and dedicated public servant, but we know that the loss of Sgt. Monica Mosley is most deeply felt by her family, loved ones and colleagues.
"While nothing will ever bring Sgt. Mosley back to those who loved her, we hope that the focused, coordinated efforts in this case provide them with the comfort of knowing that justice is being pursued,” he added. “I want to recognize the incredible efforts of the Cape May Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit, the Bridgeton Police Department, and the many other agencies involved in the investigation into her murder.”
