Atlantic City sex offender sentenced for theft, failure to register

  • Crime-Courts

An Atlantic City man who threatened to stab a Wawa employee who tried to stop him from stealing was sentenced to five years in prison in multiple cases.

Luke Hawkins, 64, was arrested Nov. 16, 2022, shortly after biking away from the Pleasantville Wawa with multiple cans of Red Bull.

Less than three months later, he was seen entering a Pleasantville home through a broken window and rummaging through items inside.

When Pleasantville police arrested him, Hawkins was found with a pry bar and screwdriver. Nothing was taken from the residence.

Then on Dec. 19, 2023, he was arrested after failing to re-register under Megan's Law for more than a month after his release from jail.

Hawkins has been a registered offender since a 1986 attack, records show.

Hawkins, then 26, grabbed the victim from behind and dragged her off the street in an attempt to assault her under a porch, according to his charge.

His Megan's Law page previously listed him as living in Egg Harbor Township.

He was sentenced to five years for third-degree burglary and theft, along with three years for failing to register. All will be served concurrently, along with an 18-month sentence that wraps up the remainder of his pending cases, including disorderly persons harassment.

Hawkins has been in the Atlantic County Justice Facility since May 8. He will remain there until his transfer to state prison.
