Atlantic City man awaiting sentencing for stealing cash register arrested ... for stealing cash register

William Flores at his detention in January.

An Atlantic City man released pending sentencing for stealing a cash register in January is back in jail for a similar charge.

William Flores, 41, had been out of prison less than two months when he was arrested Jan. 2 for stealing a cash register from the 7-Eleven.

In that incident, he forcibly ran into one worker, then threatened a second employee who tried to lock the door, police said at the time.

He pleaded guilty in that case last month, and was released Aug. 16, according to jail records.

Flores was supposed to return to court Sept. 27 for sentencing. But instead, he is back in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Police were called to a convenience store in the 3800 block of Ventnor Avenue at 6:41 p.m., for the report of a man stealing the cash register, Capt. Kevin Fair said.

Flores came to the store and talked with the merchant before leaving, officers were told. He then returned wearing different clothes and — without saying anything — took the register and fled.

Flores was identified since he was known for similar incidents.

Officer Adrianna Petinga was patrolling the Boardwalk on Thursday, when she saw Flores, who ran, according to the report.

Officers Nickolas Cardani and Anthony Nastasi apprehended him.

Flores is charged with theft, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.

It does not seem Flores stays free for long.

He was released from South Woods State Prison on Nov. 4, after apparently maxing out of the eight-year term he received in a 2014 robbery case.

Flores was in and out of custody four times during that span.

He was first released Nov. 13, 2014, before going back in May 6, 2015. His release Nov. 4, 2020 lasted nearly six months, before he went back on April 22, 2021.

Flores again was released March 23 of last year before he went back to prison again on May 16, before his term was completed Nov. 4.

During his detention hearing in January, Flores' public defender said he had been trying to get his life on track since his release from what was his sixth prison term.

At that time, he had been staying at a hotel in Atlantic City, where he was doing some work, attorney Samantha Geisinger said at the time.

If he had been released, Geisinger said Flores could have stayed with his father in Mays Landing.

It was not clear where he had been staying before this latest arrest.
