Stockton offers courses on the Holocaust, criminal justice and 'Huckleberry Finn'

The Stockton Institute for Lifelong Learning is offering several classes on a variety of subjects in March. 

The courses available are:

    Why Study the Holocaust? - Part 1 by Pearl “Peppy” Margolis - 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26, and April 2 at Stockton at Manahawkin 

In this course, students will be presented with ways to: increase knowledge of the content and context of the history of the Holocaust; foster empathy for the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides; engage in critical thinking to support thoughtful reflection on a range of societal issues; make relevant and contemporary connections; and compel action by examining the role and responsibility of individuals in a democratic society. This course is free thanks to the Sara & Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center.

    American Criminal Justice System: An Insider’s View by Professor Rick Mulvihill - 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, March 7, 21 and 28, and April 4 in Galloway Township

This course introduces students to the American criminal justice system and its elements. The classes will cover law enforcement and policing, courts and prosecution, community and institutional, in addition to victims of crime.

    (Re)Reading Mark Twain’s "Huckleberry Finn" through Percival Everett’s "James" by Professor Kristin Jacobson 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Fridays, March 7, 14, 21, and 28 in Galloway Township.

This course will examine the original “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” as it compares to Percival Everett’s 2024 version of the tale “James.” It will cover the story as told from the enslaved Jim’s perspective in a retelling of the classic novel.

Apart from Why Study the Holocaust, course fees are $45 to the general public. 

Courses are free for residents of Atlantic County older than 60.
