Mays Landing man rendered ex unconscious as she held their child

A Mays Landing man pleaded guilty to rendering his ex-girlfriend unconscious in an attack as she held their child New Year's Eve.

Michael Gillen, 29, was arrested Dec. 31, after the woman called police to tell them her ex-boyfriend assaulted her after an argument, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

She said she was holding their child when Gillen his her. He then pulled her hair and choked her, causing her to lose consciousness.

She was later taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Gillen has been jailed since.

It was not the first time he strangled a domestic violence victim, records show.


Gillen was arrested Dec. 14, 2020, for strangulation of a DV victim in Atlantic City. It was not the same woman, BreakingAC was told.

Gillen was sentenced to three years in prison for that case, with no mandatory minimum.

He also served prison time for resisting arrest/eluding during a motor vehicle stop out of Middle Township in 2021, and for multiple 2016 drug convictions out of Wildwood, court and prison records show.

He was most recently released from Bayside State Prison on May 22, 2023.

Gillen now faces five years in prison for the aggravated assault plea when he is sentenced May 2.

He remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
