An Atlantic City man is jailed on charges including vehicular homicide in the deaths of a Mays Landing couple last month.
Levon Woods, 25, of Atlantic City, was allegedly under the influence when he crossed into oncoming traffic just after 4 a.m. Feb. 22, and struck a vehicle driven by Thomas Splinter.
The head-on crash happened in the area of milepost 19.4 on County Road 552.
Splinter, 57, and his wife passenger, were killed.
He and Nancy Orellana-Splinter, 29, were just married in September, according to posts on her Facebook page.
Woods, who sustained moderate injuries, was issued traffic citations at the time for driving under the influence, reckless driving and unsafe lane change, court records show.
He previously also had a careless driving charge from Jan. 29 out of Pleasantville, court records show.
An investigation led to criminal charges of two counts each of vehicular homicide, strict-liability vehicular homicide and violation of law intended to protect public health and safety.
Woods turned himself in to State Police on Thursday.
He is jailed pending a detention hearing set for Wednesday. The Cumberland County jail normally provides mugshots but one was not available over the weekend.
Woods was charged with a simple assault in November of 2020, that was the result of a violation of a domestic violence restraining order, court records show. That was remanded to Family Court.
He also had a 2020 receiving stolen property case downgraded to municipal court.
Orellana-Splinter left behind a young son to whom her new husband was a wonderful father figure, according to a GoFundMe set up to benefit him and help the family. Splinter had three children.
