Hammonton vehicular homicide suspect back in jail after second crash

  • News

A Trenton woman indicted in a fatal Hammonton crash is back in jail after she was involved in a hit-and-run that injured a bicyclist last month.

Taquaysha Bell, 30, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury just after 1 a.m. Aug. 19, BreakingAC first reported last month.

A week later, she was arraigned in the June 19, 2020, crash that killed off-duty police officer Michael Luko Sr., 53, of Mays Landing. No mention was made at that time of the recent crash.

Bell was allegedly under the influence when she crossed into the eastbound lane while heading west on the White Horse Pike just after 11 p.m. June 19, 2020.

Luko, 53, was heading home from work at the New Jersey Human Services Police Department. He joined the department after serving 21 years as an officer in Egg Harbor City. His left behind a wife and two children. His son recently became a father, which would have been Luko’s first grandchild.

It was not clear whether Bell was tested for possible intoxication.

She was under the influence in the 2020 crash, according to charges against her in that case.

Bell’s rear seat passenger, 28-year-old Chanelle Morgan, was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus, where she underwent surgery, officials said at the time.

Bell was released on that charge, with conditions.

The crash in Trenton violated those terms, Judge Dorothy Incarvito-Garrabrant.

Bell was driving on North Olden Avenue in Trenton when she struck a bicyclist, and then left the scene. She fled the scene but returned before police arrived, according to the report previously obtained by BreakingAC.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with injuries.

It is not clear whether she was under the influence or even tested.

She is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury, failure to report a motor vehicle crash and failure to exhibit documents.

Bell will now remain jailed while her case goes through the courts.
