An Atlantic City councilman was arrested Thursday evening, BreakingAC has learned.
Councilman MD Hossain Morshed, 48, is charged with third-degree endangering for abuse/neglect of a child by a non-caretaker, court records confirm.
He is also charged with simple assault for purposely or knowingly causing bodily injury, a disorderly persons offense.
Details of the arrest were not available.
The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the court record. It has been transferred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. A spokesman said the complaints have not yet reached their office.
The councilman did not return a call and text seeking comment.
“I have no comment at this time, as I don’t know the facts,” Mayor Marty Small said.
Council President George Tibbitt said he could not comment since he was still trying to gather facts on the incident.
It’s not the first time Morshed has been accused of simple assault.
He also was charged with the disorderly persons offense Feb. 1, 2020, according to court records. That case was transferred to Brigantine due to the conflict. The outcome was not clear.
He face two such charges in 2013, but they were dismissed due to lack of prosecution.
Morshed was the victim of a brutal assault last year.
He told police he was in the parking lot at Florida and Atlantic avenues around 10:45 p.m. July 15, 2021, when he was attacked.
The Fourth Ward councilman had a swollen left eye and bloodied face a photo from his hospital bed he released at the time showed.
He alleged it was in retaliation for plans to end the needle-exchange program, but police never provided any information to back up that claim.
No arrests were ever reported.
