Family to get visit with Atlantic City man allegedly beaten in prison

  • News

The family of an Atlantic City man allegedly beaten by corrections officers will get to visit him this week.
Dontae Hathaway, 31, was sent from Bayside State Prison to Southern State after an incident April 13, according to the state Department of Corrections.
Nadine Hathaway told BreakingAC she learned of the alleged attack through the relative of another inmate. But the family had been denied any contact with him, and were concerned about his well-being. A post on Facebook garnered attention for the case.
On Sunday night, Nadine Hathaway said she was able to speak with her son. The DOC also confirmed the family will be meeting with Hathaway on Wednesday.
The family alleges Hathaway was beaten after he filed a grievance against a Bayside officer.
DOC spokesman Matthew Schuman could not detail what the incident was, but said if an officer found out about a grievance and tried to retaliate in anyway — even non-physical — they would face disciplinary action.
Hathaway is not being denied access to his attorney or visits, Schuman said Monday.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and after it's complete there will be a hearing, Schuman previously said.
Hathaway is serving a 10-year sentence on drug and gun charges, and had been in Bayside after his sentencing in January 2016. He was moved to Southern State — just down the road — after the incident.
